IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at The Links Bar

On Monday, 6th June the Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Treasure Hill to play a stableford competition on the historically testing course. The white tees were chosen giving a length of more than 6,700 yards and little run made the course excessively long. However the group is always up for a challenge and the return of many old friends helped soften the anguish!

PGS scores are traditionally low at Treasure Hill and today was no different with Andrew Purdie and Alan Flynn sharing third place with 30 points. In second place was Khun Wichai, enjoying another break from the farm in Chiang Mai, and hi 32 points was a fair reflection of his game at present. The winner was Garry Bolger, his fourth victory in six outings since his return to Pattaya a couple of weeks ago. This time he badgered and bullied the course into giving him 22 points on the front nine and the course’s loss of face was complete with eighteen points on the back giving him a total of 40 points.

Since Treasure Hill opened to visitors in about 2000 PGS has played there many times and only three golfers have ever scored four under, Gary Bolger being the most recent addition to this roll of honour.

Murray Edwards secured the only birdie ‘2’ of the day on the short sixth hole. However the day was all about how genial Gary took the course apart and later that evening social media in the form of “PGS Friends” (Facebook) was ablaze with comments regarding his round. Amazingly most were generous in praise as well!

Welcome back Wichai

On another steamy Wednesday the Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Pleasant Valley to play a stableford competition from the blue tees. The course was in very good condition but soft fairways invoked the “lift, clean and place” local rule to allow golfers to clean muddy golf balls on the fairways. Greens were receptive and ran at a good speed.

The small group found only one golfer failed to reach thirty points and Mr Len took second place with 34 points. Meanwhile Wichai Tananusorn recorded his best PGS score since moving to Chiang Mai at the end of last year. His 37 points was an excellent effort in trying and humid conditions.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the day ended with a few well deserved cool beers in Soi Buakhao at The Links Bar.

Glass sparkles at Pattana

The Pattaya Golf Society ended its golfing week on Friday, 10th June with a trip to Pattana to play a stableford competition from the yellow tees. The A and B course was in excellent condition with well grassed fairways and splendidly consistent greens and the day was the least humid for a long while, making conditions almost perfect.

From the outset, on an empty track, it appeared that the scores would be quite good and so it turned out with only two golfers failing to make the thirty mark. Returning Swedish golfer Tomas Nilsson performed well, recording 34 points to share runner-up place with Wednesday’s winner Wichai Tananusorn. The winner was Aussie Toby Glass and he has quickly found his form this trip with a fine 39 points. He also shared the ‘2’s pot with Khun Wichai, both birdying the short B3 hole.

Elsewhere tales of good and bad luck resounded, proving golf is truly the toughest game to master and Mr Len’s four-putt downhill, down grain on A8 when his first was for a birdie deserved nothing more than the Booby Bevy.

Golf at Pattana is a real treat and the course at present is well worth a visit.
