PSC Golf from the Phantom Golf Society

Monday, July 13, Bangpakong – Stableford

Bangpakong has always been one of my favourite golf courses and after about one year it was pleasing to see that we had 16 golfers who also appreciated a good course and were willing to make the journey despite the extra distance.  I could never understand why so many “golfers” did not want to make the trip as it is only about 10 minutes further than Greenwood, but I guess each to their own!

It was just a 60 minute drive from Soi Buakhow to the golf course despite the heavy traffic on Sukhumvit and we had ample time to relax before teeing off and in fact our first group got away 20 minutes early at 10.10am.  The course was practically deserted so we proceeded at a good pace with no other groups directly ahead of us and the condition of the course was terrific, with lush fairways and excellent greens.  It was great to be back there and our round was completed in just over four hours.

Steve Truelove.

It was that man again Steve Truelove, currently playing some excellent golf, who won the day with a fine 40 points, one ahead of Steve Newton (20 point back nine) in second place on a count back from Tony Cook (19 point back nine) in third.

Graham Buckingham.

Thomas Nyborg came fourth with 38 points and with 3 golfers on 37 points the resultant count back gave fifth place to Graham Buckingham (20 point back nine & 14 points on the last 6 holes), with Wan Makmul (20 point back nine & 13 points on the last 6 holes) and Neil Skilton (18 point back nine) just missing out.

1st Steve Truelove (7) 40pts

2nd Steve Newton (27) 39pts

3rd Tony Cook (29) 39pts

4th Thomas Nyborg (15) 38pts

5th Graham Buckingham (22) 37pts

Near Pins: Thomas Nyborg

Long Putts: Gerd Riedler

Wednesday, July 15, Burapha A & B – Stableford

With the PSC Monthly Tournament the day before, our numbers were understandably down and we had just 2 groups for the day’s competition at Burapha.  Just a short journey to the course and in fine weather the first group teed off 3 minutes later than our scheduled 10.33am tee time and the A & B nines were as usual in very good shape.  The going was a bit slow as we were once again behind that “tardy” Golf Society and our rounds were completed in around four hours & fifteen minutes.

Graham “Grunter” Buckingham had a day out and easily won the comp with 42 points, 5 ahead of John Pierrel in second spot.

1st Graham Buckingham (22) 42pts

2nd John Pierrel (13) 37pts

Friday, July 17, Crystal Bay C & A – Stableford

We had 3 groups signed up for the game at one of our favourites, Crystal Bay, and with the B nine still closed it was once again to be C & A.  One of our regular players, Ken Hole celebrated his 77th Birthday 2 days before so generously offered to sponsor nearest the pin on the four par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens.  Many thanks to Ken and of course HBD to him.

Christian Boysen.

With the golf course not too busy we were able to send our first four-ball off right on time at 10.00am and with no-one directly ahead of us we set a fairly good pace.  The weather was hot with a nice breeze to cool things down and the course was in good shape with the greens improving with every visit.  We all managed to finish our rounds in under four hours and look forward to returning next month.

After several weeks in the “wilderness” it was time for Christian Boysen to walk the walk instead of talking the talk and he won the day with a very good 42 points.  With two golfers on 37 points a count back was required to decide second & third spots and it was Larry Gibb (19 point back nine) who prevailed over Dave Fletcher (17 point back nine) in third place.  Another count back was necessary to decide fifth place with two on 35 points and it was Birthday Boy Ken Hole (19 point back nine) who got the honours from your writer, Peter Blackburn (17 point back nine).

1st Christian Boysen (13) 42pts

2nd Larry Gibb (20) 37pts

3rd Dave Fletcher (26) 37pts

4th Ken Hole (18) 35pts

Near Pins: A8 – Garry Hookey, C7 – Gerd Riedler

Long Putts: 9th – Ken Hole, 18th – Dave Fletcher
