Near Pins: No 5 Tom Byrne, No 8 Connie Walsh, No 12 Neville Murdock, No 16 Patrick Kelly.

It was a big field with a lot of talent but it was left to the lower C Flight to provide the winner of the Thierry Petrement Captain’s Day Trophy.  Alex Tregurtha, son of the well know Barry, was the lad that stole the show and the crystal engraved vase with a best on the day 42 points.  He was followed up the podium steps by the President Jez ‘I’m here’ Lees who showed he was riding a purple patch with a solid40 points.

The third and fourth places were decided on a count back as both were locked on 37 points; Jimmy ‘two shots and two 2’s’ Elphick had the better of it over Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan, courtesy of Jim Llano (38pts) not being a member.

There was drama in A Flight as three players all returned 41 points.  Tacking the flight gold and the Captain’s first prize crystal vase was Peter Kelly.  Dave Stockman took the silver and runner-up spot and Peter LeNoury claimed the bronze.  It was left to Irishman Dominic Downey to tidy up the flight on 38 points.

B Flight had its own 40-pointer with Lawrie McBride.  Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby added the silver to his collection with 37 points while Peter Terry’s 36 and Peter Ennis completed the C Flight podium.

Peter Kelly (two) and eight other players shared the ‘2’s pot.

After the presentation back at Lewiinski’s Thierry thanked everybody that was involved, especially Nong who ran the par-three charity bash that raised 11,310 baht, the PSC for their 20,000 donation, an anonymous donor for his 20,000 and also Colin, who raffled two golf bags that made a further 13,500.  The charity box at Lewiinski’s was opened and the contents of 27,720 baht were added to make a total of 92,532, which will be presented to the Bann Jing Jai orphanage.

An excellent day and night was had by all.

Monday, Feb. 9, Greenwood A & C – Stableford

1st Ian Pickles (15) 36pts

2nd German Odermatt (12) 36pts

3rd Colin Davis (15) 35pts

You can’t fault German Odermatt’s fine even par round, but it wasn’t as favourably distributed as Ian Pickles effort and the latter was left carrying home the biggest bag of loot thanks to count back.

The Donkey, fresh from his evil can evil display at the Dolphin Island, made a swift return to the podium as he brushed aside Aussie Greg Bates for third.

No 2’s were recorded so a rollover to Tuesday.

Tuesday, Feb. 10, Burapha – Stableford

A Flight

1st Les Cobban (8) 36pts

2nd Paul Smith (3) 34pts

3rd Paul Bray (8) 33pts

B Flight

1st Billy Britton (16) 42pts

2nd Andre Fortis (18) 37pts

C Flight

1st Christy Knight (20) 35pts

2nd Tom Morrisoe (24) 34pts

3rd Marcus Earp (36) 32pts

Billy Briton’s scorecard looked as though he had played from a nearer set of tees, like the reds, as he turned in a man of the match and B Flight winning faultless 42 points.  Billy was five clear of his flight mate Andre Fortis as these two players were the only ones to better their handicaps on the infamous greens of Bangpra.  Pay window regular Lawrie McBride sealed his second podium spot this week with34 points.

Les Cobban put the hurt on in A Flight with his even par round.  Les was two clear of Paul ‘junior’ Smith and a further stroke clear of Aussie Paul Bray.

County Dublin’s best dressed gentleman, Christy ‘Good’ Knight, took the honours in C Flight with a steady35 points.  Tom Morrisroe was a shot adrift but sadly he was denied the prize as he is not a member, much to the delight of pistol-packing Marcus Earp with his 32 points.  Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan was overjoyed but stunned that he got to see any part of the podium with his 31 points.

Bruce Anderson, Chris Setchell, Billy Briton and Pen Caruthers shared the rollover 2’s pot.

Wednesday, Feb. 11, St. Andrews – Stableford

A Flight

1st Thierry Petrement (13) 35pts

2nd Greg Bates (12) 34pts

3rd Peter Ennis (14) 34pts

B Flight

1st Patrick Regan (15) 39pts

2nd Andre Van Dyke (16) 33pts

3rd Nick Odnoral (15) 32pts

C Flight

1st Gerry Hughes (21) 37pts

2nd Mick O’Brien (22) 37pts

3rd Colm O’Donavan (20) 34pts

Another excellent turnout of 40 golfers for the short drive to play the Desmond Muirhead monster St. Andrews, and the scores were pretty good considering the toughness of the of the course.

B Flight provided the man of the match in Co. Dublin’s Patrick Regan with a splendid 39 points.  Pat was six strokes clear of B Flight friend Andre Van Dyke and a further stroke clear of Aussie starlet Nick Odnoral.

The man who is always there or there abouts, Thierry Petrement, sat atop the A Flight podium with a useful 35 points.  Thierry was a stroke clear of a quartet of golfers; Aussie Greg Bates, Peter Ennis, Michael Delatraz and German Odermatt, and when the divots had landed it was Greg who got to lift the silver as Peter Ennis closed the door shut on Michael and German.

Taking the gold in C Flight, or should it the Irish Flight as all the podium places were filled with Mick’s, was Gerry ‘the Irish rover’ Hughes with a rock solid 37 points, but he needed the aid of a count back over Mick O’Brien.  A trio of Paddies fought it out for the bronze; Colm O’Donavan, John O’Neil and Terry ‘Pork chop’ Mangan, and when the dust had settled it was Colm who got to stand on the podium as John and Terry got the same treatment as the A Flight boys.

Francis Goyons, Chaten Patel, Nick Odnoral and Kenneth Murdock shared the 2’s pot.

Thursday, Feb. 12, Pattana A & B – Stableford

A Flight

1st Colin Hopkins (13) 38pts

2nd Neil King (5) 36pts

3rd Tom Gorey (12) 36pts

B Flight

1st Reg McKay (15) 37pts

2nd Phil Davies (14) 32pts

3rd Pen Caruthers (14) 31pts

C Flight

1st Jim Elphick (24) 34pts

2nd Bernard Green (27) 29pts

3rd Christy Knight (22) 29pts

Thursday morning saw a fair group of golfers set out for Pattana in eager anticipation of playing a good round of golf.  As things turned out some did but some didn’t.  The course itself was in good condition and with the lack of rain recently it meant there was plenty of roll on the fairways, which suited some but not all.

The player who handled the conditions best was Colin Hopkins, playing of f his thirteen, and he scored a creditable 38 points for the top spot in A Flight and man of the match honours.  Colin was followed up the podium steps by a pair of players tied on even par rounds, Neil King and Ireland’s Tom Gorey, but Neil nipped Tom for the silver on count back.

Scotland’s Buckie boy Reg McKay was the top player in B Flight with a steady 37 points.  Reg was five clear of Phil ‘the Welsh wonder’ Davies and a further shot clear of Pen Caruthers.

Dropping down to C Flight we saw Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick on top of the podium with 34 points.  Jim Crook would have been second on 31 points had he been a member so this left a couple of players very grateful and Bernard Green showed that his 29 points was nothing to be ashamed of as his counted up better than that of  Christy ‘good’ Knight’s for the silver.

Neil King, Dominic Downey, Reg McKay and Bernard Green shared the 2’s pot

Friday, Feb. 13, Mt. Shadow – Stableford

A Flight

1st Ritche Fearby (3) 38pts

2nd Lawrie McBride (14) 37pts

3rd Peter Ennis (14) 31pts

B Flight

1st Shay Mitchell (16) 35pts

2nd Dave Nicholson (18) 33pts

3rd Lou Szigligeti (18) 31pts

C Flight

1st John O’Neil (20) 35pts

2nd Goran Asp (19) 31pts

3rd Eamon Doyle (21) 30pts

As it was Friday the 13th it seemed that if there was to be any safety it should be in numbers so a very large crowd hit the road to play the very tough Mountain Shadow.  And it did not disappoint as only two players bettered their handicap, and they were both in A Flight.

Taking top spot and the man of the match honours was Ritche Fearby with a rock solid 38 points.  Richie was closely followed by Ireland’s Lawrie McBride a shot back while Peter Ennis made it three pay window visits this week with a non-threatening 31 points.

Top man in B Flight was Shay Mitchell with a steady even par round and he was three clear of Dave Nicholson and a further shot ahead of non-member Paul Robinson, much to the delight of Aussie Lou Zigzag who was very grateful to see any part of the podium with 31 points.

Tom Morrisroe would have taken the C Flight gold with his steady even par round but he is also not a member so it was gifted to John O’Neill who was a shot back.  Jim Anglim went the same way as Tom as he is not a member.  Goran Asp took the silver with 31 points and Eamon Doyle was gob-smacked as he received the bronze with 30 points.

Paul Robinson was allowed to keep his 2’s prize as he shared the pot with Mark ‘Taxi’ Bonner and Goran Asp.
