Sunday, Sept. 20, Green Valley – Medal

On Sunday, as we were waiting on the first tee at Green Valley, one of our regular members Alec Hoare suggested that as the group in front of us were playing their monthly medal and we had two three-balls for our first groups, maybe we should also play medal as it would slow us down a bit.  We discussed it with another few members and all were in agreement so we decided to do it for a change from our usual stableford competition.

It turned out very well and everyone was very happy with the day’s golf, so now we have decided to make it a new feature on our schedule and we will have a monthly medal every second Sunday of the month from now on.

Alec Hoare & Joe McArdle.

It also turned out to be a very good suggestion as far as Alec was concerned as he romped home a clear winner by a margin of four shots with a net sixty nine and he was also the only player to beat his handicap in the process.  Alec now also has the distinction of being the winner of our first monthly medal, something which can never be taken away from him.

In second place was Gordon Angus with a net seventy three and John Dearden came third with a net seventy four.  Paul Pavloff meanwhile was surprised to come fourth with a net seventy five after having an eight on the par three sixteenth.

We had three ‘2’s, with Gordon Angus, Russell Gilroy and Donal McGuigan all recording one each.

1st Alec Hoare (16) net 69

2nd Gordon Angus (6) net 73

3rd John Dearden (18) net 74

4th Paul Pavloff (7) net 75

2’s: Gordon Angus, Russell Gilroy, Donal McGuigan.

Tuesday, Sept. 22, St. Andrews – Stableford

Today we joined up with our friends from The Pratumnak Friendly Golf Society and went to St Andrews to take advantage of their special offer of free golf carts.  This makes it very good value to play on a beautiful and excellent golf course for a very reasonable price.

The course was quiet and as usual in excellent condition with reasonably fast greens and everyone enjoyed it very much.  It was also a very pleasant day for golf, not too hot and no rain, unlike what happened over the next few days.

Although the largest percentage of the group came from the PFGS, one of our members from The Tara Court came out the winner, this was Joe McArdle who had forty points and won by a clear three.  In second place was Donal McGuigan with thirty seven and third was Desire Houhenpen with thirty six.  Kevin Blake came in fourth with thirty three points and Paul Pavloff took up the last podium spot a further point back in fifth.

The ‘2’s were shared by Donal McGuigan and Desire Houhenpen with one each.

1st Joe McArdle (12) 40pts

2nd Donal McGuigan (17) 37pts

3rd Desire Houhenpen (10) 36pts

4th Kevin Blake (9) 33pts

5th Paul Pavloff (7) 32pts

2’s: Donal McGuigan, Desire Houhenpen.

Thursday, Sept. 24, Burapha – Stableford

After missing our usual Thursday game the previous week because of all the rain and flooding we were back at our regular venue Burapha today on a beautiful day for golf.  It was not too hot and although it looked like rain a few times we got round dry.

Today we had a smaller group out as many of our friends have gone home for a break before the winter comes over there.  We all decided today to play off the white tees and we were on the A and B nines, which are probably the easier nines to play.

The scoring wasn’t great despite the perfect conditions and Serge Straeten was the only one to beat his handicap and won with thirty seven points.  Serge was also the only one to get a ‘2’ today so he had a good payday.  In second place a long way back was Russell Gilroy with thirty one points.

1st Serge Straeten (17) 37pts

2nd Russell Gilroy (15) 31pts

2’s: Serge Straeten
