Sunday, Jan. 24, Silky Oak – Stableford

1st Colin Davis (20) 42pts

2nd Paul West (18) 40pts

3rd Andy Kelleher (9) 36pts

Not a big turnout due to the wet start but after an hour’s play the sun came out and with the temp down it was just like playing back in the UK on a perfect summer’s day.

Colin Davis – winner at Silky Oak.

Today it was the superstars’ day off with the 2nd division taking all the prizes.  The 1st group out, comprising of Christen Boysen, Phil Davies & Mogens Melander, were all suffering from over golfing but the Donkey, fresh from getting the R removed from his Hcp. and with his back in perfect condition, was rolling in the clover.  25 points on the front nine saw everything dropping or bouncing out of the water, but the back nine was a different story although he did enough to hold on for the win with 42 points in total.

Paul West was hard on his the Donkey’s tail, storming the back nine until he got to the last where a wayward tee-shot saw him in bushes and when we got to the green he found he had played the wrong ball from the rough.  The final hole blob put an end to his challenge.

Andy Kelleher played a steady round for 36 points and third place with Sean Larner taking fourth on 31.

Monday, Jan. 25, Greenwood – Stableford

A Flight

1st Aidan Murray (22) 36pts

2nd Alistar Gall (18) 36pts

3rd Andy Kelleher (9) 36pts

B Flight

1st Glen Hillard (24) 36pts

2nd Vero Morgan (26) 35pts

3rd Mogen’s Melander (25) 31pts

With the winter weather hitting Thailand  20 hardy souls turned up at a cold and windswept Greenwood.  A few had cancelled at the sight of the weather but the brave soldiered on.

We forgot to bring the near pin markers today so we had a ‘2’s comp and for a change we played from the yellow tees after taking into account the weather conditions.  It turned out to be a good decision as only 4 players played to their handicaps.

In B flight it was Glen Hillard taking first place with an even par 36 points, one ahead of Vero Morgan in second while Mogens Melander beat Tony Cook on count back for third.

A flight was won by the handicap chairman Aidan Murray with 36 points, his 19 on the back nine giving him the edge in a count back over Alistar Gall and Andy Kelleher.

Jim Oakley and Mogens Melander shared the ‘2’s pot.

We had a good turnout for the medal this month, 48 eager souls hoping to get their name on the honors board.  And because of the big turnout the management at Crystal Bay opened up the B nine, which has been closed for renovation for over a year.  It was great to play on a fairway without a single diviot on it, even though they had soaked the fairways and it was all carry, but when it does dry out it should be perfect.

We had a 2-tee start with the one on the C nine having to wait behind Tropical Golf who were also playing medal, so it was to be a slow round, but on B nine we had a clear run.

Three flights today with 4 places in each plus 4 near pins and 2 long putts.  Unfortunately one of the near pins was picked up early and a long putt went missing as well, this always seems to happen when you get a 2-tee start.  The remaining near pin prizes were claimed by (C4) Mogen’s Melander, (C7) John Carlton, (B4) Paul Hibbard, and (C9) Clive Mathews

Back at Colin’s Golf Bar after the usual free buffet and the presentation the new monthly medal winner Aidan Murray rang the bell, which was warmly greeted by all concerned.  Well done Aidan!
