Nongprue have launched renewed efforts to get sub-district residents and food vendors to stop using polystyrene containers.

Nongprue Mayor Mai Chaiyanit and staffers from the Health and Environment Department visited Raiwanasin Market Feb. 16 to lobby for use of environmentally sensitive packaging.

They explained how Styrofoam and other polystyrene containers are not biodegradable and contribute to the area’s waste problem and, ultimately, global warming. Instead, the vendors were encouraged to use natural materials like sugar cane leaves and banana leaves to wrap food and products.

Health workers also told the vendors that when polystyrene is heated by hot food, dangerous chemicals and benzene can mix into the food, causing everything from stomach discomfort to death.
