BANGKOK, 10 March 2012  – The government is poised to strengthen women’s role in society with its Thai Women Empowerment Fund in an effort to push the country towards prosperity.

According to the interview with Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office Nalinee Thavisin on the government’s weekly talk show, the multi-billion-baht Thai Women Empowerment Fund is aimed at giving women access to financial assistance. Each province will receive a budget of THB100 million for distribution to female members in the form of soft loan, so that they can set up their own businesses or improve their existing ones.

The government believes that Thai women’s status will be better recognized and they will be able to play a more important role in the country’s development when they are financially independent. The project is expected to attract 10 million members.

Members of the fund must be aged 15 or above. Application for membership is available at all local Non-Formal and Informal Education offices from today until March 31. For more information, call 1166.
