Two malaria researches of Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University published in The New England Journal of Medicine

BANGKOK, 31 July 2014  –Two malaria research programs of the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University have been selected for publication in The New England Journal of Medicine, August 1st, 2014. And the World Health Organization (WHO) is preparing to enter them in its database for malaria treatment around the globe, according to the project director Professor Sasithorn Pukritiyakamee.

The two research studies on the efficiency of KAE 609, are a new malaria medicine first tested on Thai patients and artesunate to address drug resistance in Asia. The WHO will add further research to address malaria in 97 countries.

She also said that this is a great success for researchers. The artesunate drug resistance had been studied from May 2011 to April 2013 in 10 countries since more drug resistance has been found gradually increasing in the past five years.
