About 20 young drivers of loud, modified pickup trucks were fined for causing a public disturbance in Jomtien Beach, but police seeking illegal drugs came up empty.
About 60 members of the “Chalarm Sing,” or “speedy shark” gang congregated at the beach July 8, revving their modified-muffler Chevys, Toyotas and Mitsubishis to show off and pump out loud tunes for the gaggles of teen girls milling among the members.
Police and military personnel managed to capture 20 of the modified pickups, and although the gang was noisy, members proved to be drug-free.
Police zoomed into the area and about 40 trucks escaped. But 20 weren’t as quick. Some of the gang members weren’t hard to identify, as they wore t-shirts with the name of their gang.
Police and military personnel searched the trucks, looking for drugs, but found none. The youths were fined 500 baht each for making a racket and let go.
