BANGKOK, 27 December 2013 The transport minister has ordered relevant units to step up road safety measures after 29 people were killed in a tour bus accident in the northeastern province of Petchabun early this week.

Transport minister Chatchart Suthipan has ordered the Highway department and the government-run Transport Co. ltd. to enforce three safety measures to prevent such accident from happening in future.

The three measures include increasing the number of easy-to-spot-warning signs on highways, monitoring drivers to ensure that they strictly follow road safety regulations, and thoroughly checking vehicles before each trip.

Meanwhile, Deputy Transport Minister Gen Prin Suwannathat said drivers would be required to undergo a sobriety test before they started working; they should also be allowed to take a rest every four hours while on duty.
