Area officials made good on their promises to crackdown – at least temporarily – on Beach Road traffic scofflaws by inspecting 17 new bus stops and writing tickets for buses and taxis not using them.

Banglamung District Chief Sakchai Taengho and Pattaya Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh led police officers and volunteers on the Jan. 9 tour of the new yellow-and-white stopping zones for baht buses, tour buses and taxis.

Also, as promised, officers wrote tickets and locked wheels of those stopped in red-and-white “no parking” zones.

The sweep came a day after Chonburi Gov. Khomsan Ekachai announced a crackdown on the “nonsense” that Beach Road traffic has become. Double-parking and stopping in red-and-white “no parking” zones will be specifically targeted.

The yellow stop zones are located near Beach Road’s popular shopping, entertainment and hotel destinations and are spaced 4-8 minutes apart, officials said.

Sakchai promised a continual monitoring of bus-stop usage for the next three months. If people start to respect the yellow and red zones, he said, “It will solve traffic problems over the long term.”
