BANGKOK, Aug 19 — Three Thai nationals detained in Japan in connection with a car accident that that left a Japanese student dead has rejected assistance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesperson Sek Wannamethee said that the three Thais arrested by the Japanese authorities have refused to identify themselves and have not asked for assistance from the Thai Embassy in Tokyo.
The car the three were travelling in hit two Japanese students on the road in Choshi city in Chiba province last Thursday, killing a male student and severely injuring a female student.
The MFA spokesman said the incident has become a focus of interest of Japanese media, as a Japanese student was killed.
Mr Sek said that ministry reiterated to the embassy in Tokyo to closely watch the case and counsel the three suspects.
However, all three expressed that they did not want their identities to be made public and that they did not need any special assistance on the matter.
Besides, the three suspects have been provided with an attorney by the Japanese authorities and so the MFA has decided not to contact their families in Thailand just yet.
The MFA spokesman further pointed out that the accident should not affect the visa exemption for Thai nationals either, as the case was an accident.
