Thailand teams up with INTERPOL to solve environmental crimes

BANGKOK, 14 February 2012  – The INTERPOL Environmental Crime Meeting is currently taking place in Thailand, with representatives from 66 countries worldwide participating in the conference. 

Deputy Prime Minister Pol. Capt. Chalerm Yubumrung presided over the opening ceremony of the 23rd Meeting of the INTERPOL Wildlife Working Group and the 17th Meeting of the INTERPOL Pollution Crime Working Group, which have been held jointly for the first time in Bangkok. INTERPOL representatives from 66 countries worldwide have assembled to discuss the situation and progress, as well as to establish measures to resolve environmental crimes.

Meanwhile, Deputy Police Chief Pol. Gen. Pansiri Prapawat, Director of the Environmental Crime Suppression Division, stated that, at present, more tigers are being hunted for trafficking purposes. Thus, representatives have been invited to join a conference on tiger trafficking from countries which are home to tigers as well as countries which are transit routes for wildlife trafficking, such as China, Russia, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc. Thailand has positioned itself against wildlife trafficking and continuously battled against the trade of animals.

The annual meeting, which kicked off on 13 February, will be held till the 17 February.
