BANGKOK, 22 May 2013  Thailand and South Korea have inked an agreement on judicial cooperation in civil matters.

According to Wirat Chinwinigkul, Secretary-General of the Office of the Judiciary, the Office has signed an agreement with Cho Tae Yul, 2nd Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Korea. The signing ceremony was witnessed by South Korean Ambassador to Thailand Jon Jae Mun and other Thai and South Korean officials.

The agreement will ease the workload for justice courts of both countries, while allowing both sides to share experiences on civil and commercial cases. This is the 5th agreement, after Spain, Australia, Indonesia, and China, Thailand has signed with other countries.

The Judiciary Office secretary general said the courts will, from now on, be able to go through the processes much faster and more easily, including the issuance of subpoenas and indictments, deposition of witnesses, and acquisition of other information on cases.

However, Mr Wirat said the agreement did not include cooperation on criminal cases, as both sides did not want to violate the rights of defendants.
