Teachers view Thai students as lacking analytical thinking skills: Poll

BANGKOK, Jan 8 – Teachers responding to a Suan Dusit poll said that capacity to apply cutting-edge technology is the strong point of Thai education, but the its weak point is that students still fail to develop analytical thinking.

The poll was conducted by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University among 2,508 teachers across the country from January 2-7, 2013.

Regarding the strengths of Thai education, 31.86 per cent of teachers surveyed said utilizing cutting-edge technology as teaching tools is the prominent point, followed by 24.78 per cent saying language skills development in preparation for the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and 16.81 per cent noting curriculum adjustment to suit local surroundings.

Meanwhile, equal educational opportunities are a strength, said 15.93 per cent of teachers responding to the poll.

However, 30.36 per cent of teachers said the weakness of Thai education is students still lack analytical thinking skills and language proficiency, while 29.32 per cent cited unstable and substandard curriculum as the weak point.

The survey said teachers viewed most students as not paying attention in class and not reviewing lessons.

Thai students are interested in entertainment and games and new technologies rather than learning about Thai culture and tradition, according to the teachers.
