A Swedish man got a rude surprise when he returned to Thailand and checked the balance on his bank account to find 100,000 baht gone.

Henrik Christian Koch, 48, filed a police complaint after clerks at the Bangkok Bank branch in Central Festival Pattaya Beach told him he had just over 1 baht left.

Koch had made regular deposits to the account since December 2016, but left Thailand for a year to attend to family matters.

Bank records showed that someone using a mobile phone had registered to access his account via internet banking and, on March 17 last year, made two withdrawals for 90,000 and 9,900 baht.

Koch insisted he gave no one permission to access his account.

Police are tracing the number to locate the thief.

Update: Thai media is reporting Koch has a criminal record for drugs and weapons possession in Pattaya.
