A firestorm that swept through commercial buildings in Sriracha was estimated to have caused more than 20 million baht in damage.

Police, firefighters and volunteers from the Pratheep Thammasathan Foundation responded to the Jan. 7 blaze in the Sriracha Market area. Ten fire companies battled the fire for an hour before bringing it under control.

Four residents and one fireman were injured.

A Burmese employee at a fish shop said the fire broke out in the two-story building where he worked. He said he was working on the first floor and saw wires on the second floor catch fire. He tried to extinguish the flames, but suffered burns to his face and body before giving up the fight.

The fire jumped quickly from building to building as all the two-story structures had concrete foundations and first-floor walls, but the upper floor was constructed entirely of wood.
