The Ministry of Commerce, in collaboration with the Support Arts and Crafts International Center of Thailand, is organizing the International Innovative Craft Fair 2012 from March 15th– 18th, 2012.

Held for the first time in Thailand, the International Innovative Craft Fair is aimed at showcasing the uniqueness and the sheer variety of Thai and international craft products as well as promoting innovative arts and crafts-trading and networking between exporters, manufacturers, traders, retailers and designers.

Deputy Commerce Minister Siriwat Kajornprasart said new generation craftsmen, while drawing upon traditional craft forms, often incorporate inventive techniques in creating contemporary designs. He said through creativity, Thai-made craft products increasingly present great economic value and can boost trade relations between nations.

Director of the Support Arts and Crafts International Center of Thailand (SACICT) Pimpapan Charnsilp said that the fair presents an opportunity for Thais to be more informed of their own unique artistry and heritage.

She elaborated that the fair compiles strikingly innovative products from several countries, which include China, Italy, France, the Czech Republic and Morocco.

She added that in the face of competition from other ASEAN countries in the market, Thailand’s handicrafts, known for its diversity, intricate detailing and distinctive craftsmanship, have a competitive edge over others in the region.

Other activities within the fair include a seminar on global manufacturing and commercial approach of handicraft products, a business matching activity where exhibitors are to meet with domestic and oversea buyers, and a demonstration and workshop on Thai and foreign D.I.Y. craft making. Product categories featured at the fair are products made from fabric, pottery, basketry, jewelry and accessories, gifts and home decorations, and other lifestyle products.

The International Innovative Craft Fair 2012 is expected to attract more than 30,000 visitors.
