Sailor’s effort fails to save Russian from drowning

A valiant effort by a Royal Thai Navy sailor failed to save the life of a Russian man who drowned in Sattahip.

Tolstik Olegovich Igo, 22, was pronounced dead at Queen Sirikit Naval Medical Center Dec. 15.

Navy Lt. Chaiwuth Chang­somboon, 57, said he was on Sattahip Beach when he saw tourists trying to bring a Russian man to shore.

He ran to assist and administered CPR to the man, who was not breathing. Chaiwith then put him in the back of his pickup truck and rushed him to Apakorn Kittiwong Hospital, which immediately transferred him to Queen Sirikit Naval Medical Center.

Police said the Russian suffered an epileptic fit while swimming.
