Eight people were hurt when a runaway tour bus slammed into six vehicles stopped at a South Pattaya intersection.

Thanawat Srisongmuang, driver of the Phumpetch Tour Co. coach, claimed the brakes on the Bangkok-registered bus failed as he drove down the hill to the junction of South and Thappraya roads.

The 50-year-old driver was taken into custody for investigation of reckless driving resulting in injury.

Surat Panlee, one of those injured, said she and her husband were driving through the intersection when the bus slammed into her car, then careened into a utility pole and back into traffic to hit other vehicles.

The bus took out a baht bus, motorcycle and four cars, sending baht bus passengers, the motorcyclist and other drivers to the hospital.
