ROI ET, 26 March 2015 – Although Thailand has experienced a sluggish economic growth in recent years, the province of Roi Et has shown its confidence to strike a two digit growth this year.

According to Governor Somsak Jangtrakul, the province expects a 15.1 per cent growth in 2015 due to concerted efforts by all sectors to drive the provincial economy ahead of the ASEAN Economic Community, plus a 30 per cent increase in budgetary support from the central government.

Moreover, he said Roi Et has strong economic fundamentals given its world renowned organic Hom Mali rice and abundant fruits and vegetables. The provincial administration has also worked to help farmers reduce cost of production and increase productivity per rai, using modern technologies.

The governor revealed that the province’s economy was experiencing a brighter prospect following a dramatic surge in its revenue from air transport. In February, air passengers at Roi Et Airport were recorded at 16,487. As of 25 March, the number surged to 21,000.

The governor indicated that he would soon ask the central government to approve projects to expand the provincial airport and establish an industrial settlement to cushion expanding aviation businesses. All these projects constitute his plan to make Roi Et the capital of central Isan (northeastern) region.
