BANGKOK, 24 July 2015 – The Department of Medical Services (DMS) has received the best public service award from the United Nations (UN) for its ‘Treat and Teach, No Child Patient Left Behind’ campaign this year.

Director of the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health Dr. Siraporn Sawasdiworn, said the campaign is based on Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s concept of promoting holistic school in hospital.

It has been operated since 1995 under the collaboration of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology. Child patients with chronic diseases are given an opportunity to receive an education during their long treatment in hospital through an e-learning approach.

There are currently 29 hospitals in Thailand that have adopted the holistic school method. 95% of 50,000 child patients entering the program each year are able to return to school without academic struggle.
