Police to peacefully handle rallies and ensure security at polling stations

BANGKOK, 22 December 2013 The Royal Thai Police Commissioner-General has instructed all law enforcement agencies to peacefully handle upcoming political rallies while maintaining security at polling stations. 

Royal Thai Police Commissioner-General Police General Adul Sangsingkaew has instructed all law enforcement agencies to peacefully handle political rallies planned for December 21 to 23 to ensure no violent incidents take place ahead of the general elections. Traffic Police have also been instructed to manage traffic problems during mass rallies scheduled for December 22.

Meanwhile, security plans are being drawn up for MP candidate registration on December 23. The Metropolitan Police Commissioner will be responsible for ensuring security at polling stations. Rally guards and hardcore members will be closely monitored to prevent violent incidents occurring. Authorities will investigate whether rally financiers’ support of the ongoing protests breaches the law.

Police General Worapong Chewprecha said security measures have been prepared for the Thai-Japanese Stadium, where the MP registration will be held from December 23 to 27. The measures include setting up checkpoints, a security perimeter, among others.
