BANGKOK, 20 September 2012  – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has instructed related officials to urgently remove anything that is causing drainage of rainwater in Bangkok to slow down.

The Prime Minister stated that after the city was hit by heavy rain on Tuesday, the water drainage system was found inefficient, causing many parts of Bangkok to be flooded. She told authorities to check if there are any obstacles in the waterways and asked the people to take care of canals and public areas.

Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit has been assigned to coordinate with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, in asking residents and housing developers to check their sewages for any barriers. In the case that sand from last year’s flood is found blocking the drainage system, the Interior Minister will ask the Corrections Department to dredge sewages.
