Work to widen the Pik Plub Canal is expected to wrap by month’s end, increasing the speed at which Naklua storm runoff can drain.

Pattaya deputy mayors Pattana Boonsawat and Banlue Kullavanijaya checked the progress on the canal’s gate expansion, which will widen its opening from a meter wide to 2.6 meters and extend the gate from 50 to 90 meters.

Currently the project is waiting for the Provincial Waterworks Authority to remove water pipes. Once they’re relocated the city will dig the rest of the trench to complete the project, hopefully by the end of October.

The project will greatly expand the rate at which water drains from the canal into the sea, improving flooding woes in Naklua.

The deputy mayors also checked out progress on new drainage pipes being laid under Soi Kanrua in Naklua. Previously sand in storm runoff repeatedly clogged the narrow pipes. New wider pipes are being laid to replace them, along with a culvert to catch the sand.
