PHUKET, 17 April 2012  - Phuket Deputy Governor Somkiat Sangkaosuttirak has confirmed that Bang Niew Dam Reservoir was not affected by yesterday’s quakes, following an examination by a team of geologists.

Two quakes reportedly occurred in the evening on April 16. They were measured at 4.3 and 5.3 magnitudes on the Richter scale and occurred only minutes apart.

The tremors caused walls of 11 homes in a local village, situated in Thalang district, to crack. The Phuket Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office and Sri Sunthorn municipal officials are now giving residents necessary assistance.

Meanwhile, in response to rumors that Bang Niew Dam Reservoir located in Thalang district would break as a consequence of the quakes, Mr Somkiat insisted an inspection by geological experts has been carried out recently and no damages were found.

The Deputy Governor further stated that all relevant agencies have been instructed to continue to monitor the situation around the clock, given that the tourist island has experienced up to 8 tremors since yesterday. The Phuket Municipality is also stringently inspecting historical and high-rise buildings for any damages.
