The Provincial Electricity Authority is more than quadrupling capacity in South Pattaya to meet the needs of the quickly growing city.

The utility company has begun replacing 1.5 kilometers of power poles along Sukhumvit Road between South Road and the Shell gas station, taking out 12-meter-tall poles and replacing them with 22-meter-tall towers.

PEA operations chief Sorat Kositkul said the pole replacement is the first step toward an upgrade of the Pattaya power distribution station. Currently, the station has output capacity of 22,000 voltage. Once completed by December, the upgrade will take the station to a limit of 115,000 volts, an increase of 422 percent.

At some point, PEA will need to turn off the power to all of the South Pattaya area for a day to complete the switch over. However, the date has not been set.

Sorat said the public would be advised well in advance of the eventual power disruption.
