With a harsh international media spotlight on Pattaya, local officials warned the city’s busiest adult entertainment streets to keep it low-key this Songkran and pay respect to the traditional values of the Thai New Year.

Mayor Anan Charoenchasri and spokesman Pinit Maneerat met with bar owners from Walking Street and Soi 6 to make the annual appeal for Songkran revelers to dress appropriately and act responsibly.

Pattaya authorities are still feeling the sting of a U.K. tabloid newspaper story calling the city the “sex capital of the world”. Officials, thus, are stressing “traditional values” during the most hedonistic free-for-all of the year.

Anan said the city will be decorating Walking Street to reflect the history of Songkran and urged bar owners to have their employees dress in traditional costumes.
