Anyway you slice it, the cake the Eastern Seaboard Chefs Association baked for HM the King’s 85th birthday was a lot of macaroons.

It took 8,500 of them piled high, in fact, to create the confection marking Father’s Day and to benefit charities. Association President Surasak Pankluab, Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh and Pattaya City Council members dug in Dec. 4 on Beach Road at Soi 4 to aid five local organizations.

Proceeds from the 50-baht slices went to the Banglamung Home for Boys, Father Ray Foundation, Chonburi Child Development and Rehabilitation Home, Banglamung Home for the Elderly and Pattaya Redemptorist School for the Blind.

Surasak said the association always bakes cakes to honor the King, including a 149-meter-long cake in 2010.

“This year, the association wanted to try something different so we chose delicious macaroons, which are easily made and easily edible, and can be stored for distribution. I have to thank Pattaya for sponsoring and participating in the activity,” he said.
