Despite trenches being cut in the freshly laid sand, Pattaya Beach generally is looking healthier now that the beach-restoration effort has reached its mid-point.

Work crews have passed Central Road as they continue to widen the beach, bring in new sand and lay underwater breakwaters to prevent erosion.

Across the northern section of beachfront, tourists could be seen laying on mats, eating, sunbathing and enjoying family activities on sand that looked brighter, wider and smoother.

Pattaya, however, has undermined the half-billion-baht project by cutting holes in the beachfront pavement, allowing storm runoff to stream onto the beach and cut fresh trenches in the new sand.

The overall project is slated to finish Nov. 19, but additional patch jobs obviously will be required.
