BANGKOK, 24 June 2013 The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has given its backing to peace talks between the Thai government and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) separatist group.

According to the Islamic Committee of the Five Southern Border Provinces, the OIC members agreed that the ongoing peace dialogue could resolve the southern unrest.

The local committee is planning to launch its own campaign against violent attacks during the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

The committee noted however that it cannot establish direct communication with the BRN group and would instead seek to send its requests for peace via the National Security Council and the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center.

Involved parties earlier agreed to scale back violence in the country’s south during the Ramadan month, which will last from July 9th to August 7th.

The comment came ahead of Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubumrung’s visit to the Deep South during June 29-30. Mr Chalerm has so far dismissed reports of renewed attacks during the holy month and is pushing ahead with his upcoming trip to the region.
