BANGKOK, 31 March 2015 – The President of the National Legislative Assembly is confident that the leader of the National Council for Peace and Order will exercise his power granted by Section 44 of the interim Constitution for the good of Thailand.

NLA President Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, who helped draft the interim charter, said that even when Thailand is under martial law, the power of Article 44 of the 2014 provisional Constitution is still in effect and can be referred to by the NCPO leader anyhow.

Mr. Pornpetch’s comment was heard after it had been reported that the government would revoke martial law, which has been imposed across the country since last May, and replace it with Article 44 instead.

He said that Article 44 is not a special law that will interfere in the work of the executive branch, the legislative branch and the judicial branch.

Mr. Pornpetch believes Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, the NCPO leader, will wield his power in a good way and for the interest of Thailand.
