Many Thai mobile phone users may not know it, but you can switch carriers and keep your same number, according to the country’s telecom regulator.

Kohkij Danchaiwijit, deputy secretary for the National Broadcasting Telecommunications Commission, hosted a news briefing at the Sanctuary of Truth Nov. 19 to explain that mobile users have the right to change and use different network providers and not lose their number.

Number portability has been available for some time, but the NBTC is making a more-concerted effort to publicize that people don’t have to stick with their same carrier just to keep their number.

This applies to all SIM cards, pre- or post-paid, and the process is very easy, he said.

The application requires proper identification and proof of residence. There is a 29-baht fee to move a number between carriers and a new SIM card may be required.

If any users have been mistakenly transferred or have any problems with the process, they can contact the NBCT Call Center at 1200 for further instructions, he said.
