BANGKOK, Feb 27 – Two navy personnel, arrested by police in the capital yesterday for carrying weapons, were returning from their duty in Thailand’s South, according to navy secretary Rear Adm Kan Dee-ubon.

He said Petty Officer Sompong Taennark and Petty Officer Preecha Mulpuak, originally attached to the Naval Special Warfare Command (SEALs), are assigned to assist the Marine Special Task Force in the South.

They were nabbed by Bukkhalo police with two pistols and some bullets.

Rear Adm Kan said the Marine Special Task Force was instructed to set up a fact-finding committee on the activities of the two non-commissioned officers and promised to take harsh disciplinary action against them if they were found guilty.

He said police could deal with them accordingly for carrying weapons in public, adding that the navy would not protect them should they be found to have committed an offence.

Deputy Metropolitan police commander Pol Maj Gen Thitirat Nonghanpitak said the two navy personnel possessed security guard credentials from the People’s Democratic Reform Committee and some accessories carrying Thai flag designs.

They told police that they were hired to guard important persons at rally sites for a certain period, he said.

The two were handed over to the naval judge advocate for further action after police charged them with inappropriately carrying weapons.
