BANGKOK, 11 April 2012  – Myanmar has urged Thailand to speed up the opening of more nationality identification centers, while it is expected that more Myanmar nationals will cross the border to seek employment here.

Mr. Phadermchai Sasomsub, Minister of Labor, said on Tuesday that, during his meeting with Minister to the Myanmar Embassy in Thailand, Mr. U Myo Tint, the focus was given to the planned opening of 5 new nationality identification centers in Bangkok, Samut Sakhon, Samut Prakan, Surat Thani and Chiang Mai, which have been delayed to the end of this month due to formalities to be settled on the Thai side.

Mr. Phadermchai stated that Mr. U Myo Tint stressed with him about the government of Myanmar’s wish to see its citizens legally permitted to work overseas; therefore, the identification centers are essential in making everything go by the book.

In addition, Mr. U Myo Tint also pledged with Thailand that the Myanmar government will send its officials to station at all new identification centers while expressing his hope that the two countries’ collaboration will enable the identification process to complete by June, as planned.

However, the Thai Labor Minister has admitted that the June deadline may not be met and suggested the Thai government postpone it for some more time.
