Pol Gen Jate Mongkolhutthi who chairs the committee reviewing the request said he would submit the result of consideration to the national police chief for further approval. According to him, the hijab to be allowed must have the same color as the uniform, which is khaki, and a long sleeve shirt will be worn with a long skirt or pants. The hijab can be worn tucked into the collar of the uniform.
The requests for Muslim policewomen to wear the Muslim head covering came via MPs and the Central Islamic Committee of Pattani Province. A survey of some 100 Muslim policewomen showed that up to 60 of them wanted to wear the hijab.
The reason for the approval was that wearing the hijab while on duty would not affect performance.
