MUKDAHAN, 24 June 2015 – Different agencies in the northeastern province of Mukdahan have convened a brain-storming session to discuss plans to prepare the district of Nong Sung for Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS).

Participants met up today to share their ideas related to implementation plans and schemes aimed at arranging for Nong Sung district to enter Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS).

GIAHS was found in 2002 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to raise public awareness of agricultural heritage sites. Mukdahan province has decided to name Nong Sung district as a candidate for GIAHS due to its various qualifications, including food security, biodiversity in agricultural and ecological systems, and proper use of local technologies as well as conservation of local wisdom.

A provincial-level working group has been formed to supervise the nomination of Nong Sung district for the GIAHS. After the meeting, the group is scheduled to visit Ban Nongsung, Ban Pu and Ban Pao villages to inform the locals of the province’s plan to put the district on the global agricultural heritage list.
