BANGKOK, 27 June 2014, – All cigarette makers, importers and distributors must increase the size of health warnings to cover 85% of the package by September 23rd, says the Ministry of Public Health (MPH).

According to Permanent Secretary of the MPH, Dr. Narong Sahamethapat, JT International Thailand Company Limited sued the Ministry last year for the former’s regulation ordering the latter to increase the warning coverage to 85 percent and the court temporarily suspended the Ministry’s order.

But the Supreme Administrative Court ruled on June 26th that the order could take effect.

The ruling has effectively required all cigarette makers to comply with the Ministry’s order by September 23rd, increasing the warning coverage to 85 percent of the pack, said Dr.Narong.

Violators are subject to a fine of 20,000 to 100,000 baht.
