Mideast couple arrested for quick-change scams

A Middle Eastern couple was arrested for allegedly robbing tourists at shopping malls, hotels and on Jomtien Beach.

Ibrahim Polat, 44, from Turkey and his Iranian wife, Sadena Geravandeh Hamedani, 45, were captured at the Amazon Condo on Soi Wat Boonkanchanaram June 12 following multiple complaints about their alleged quick-change scams.

Victims said the two alleged grifters would befriend foreign tourists and ask to change foreign currency. Then, through distraction and fast hands, they’d make off on their motorbike with more currency than they’d arrived with, police said.

The bike used in the crimes also was seized.

The couple denied the charges, but police said they had CCTV footage of one of the scams going down.
