BANGKOK, 19 August 2011– Education Minister Woravat Auapinyakul has voiced his readiness to support the operation of teachers nationwide in an effort to uplift teaching and learning standards in the national education system.

The minister tasked the Teachers’ Council of Thailand with mapping out the course structure and knowledge content to make Thailand stronger in education. He said the council is taking care of the teaching standard of 800,000 teachers nationwide.

Mr Woravat suggested that the system should facilitate human resource development according to personal competence and skills to make sure that students can find jobs after their graduation. He said the government is ready to amend any laws impeding the operation and give full financial support.

As for the academic standing evaluation for teachers in which they are complaining that they are overwhelmed with many tasks and have no time to complete the required reports in time for evaluation, the minister responded that the evaluation process will be changed by focusing more on students’ achievement.

Mr Woravat added that from now on he will let parents evaluate the performance of teachers by asking them to supply evaluation letters to the Teachers’ Council of Thailand twice a year.
