BANGKOK, 24 Mar 2014,  The Election Commission is satisfied with the overall situation of yesterday’s advance voting of the senatorial election, despite the very low voter turnout.

According to EC Secretary-General Phuchong Nutrawong, 2.1 million voters exercised their rights in the advance polls, which accounted for only 4.18% of the registered voters. Srisaket topped the voter turnout, with 30.55% of the voters who had registered for the advance voting casting their votes; the province with the lowest voter turnout is Krabi, at 1.29%.

Mr. Phuchong said several voters showed up to vote without registering in advance, during the registration period from March 10th - 14th.

The EC Secretary General also voiced his opinion on the low voter turnout, assuming that the recent annulment of the February 2nd general election might have discouraged citizens to exercise their voting rights. His agency would quickly address the issue by launching an election promotion campaign from Wednesday onward, handing out leaflets about the polls to tollway users. He said the campaign would begin at the Prachachuen tollway booth.
