The family lives in a 30-sq.-meter shack with roof of wood and tin scraps on rented land. Their only income is from their son, one of six children, and is insufficient to meet all their needs.

Jee, a Kamphaeng Phet native, said she has lived in Pattaya for decades and used to earn income from driving motorcycle taxis and growing vegetables. Now they can’t work. The couple gets a total welfare allowance of about 2,200 baht.

The Pattaya officials also met 56-year-old Tao Pasuk, who has lived in a small hut in a deserted area with his mother, Man Pasuk, for more than 10 years. He also is paralyzed, but does not know why, as he ignored his illness due to lack of money for medical care. His mother is 70 and cannot work. They get food from a local temple.

Wutisak and the health officials gave everyone a checkup, guidance on both self therapy and self-help, and presented them with cash and bags of basic necessities.
