BANGKOK, 4 July 2014 – The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has been set to strictly regulate taxi services by requiring taxi cab companies to keep a profile of all their drivers.

According to DLT Director-General Atchasatike Rattana Dilok Na Phuket, taxi cab operators have been summoned to a meeting to reorganize taxi services. The DLT has requested that operators keep a profile of their all drivers and submit them to the department by July 15 so that background checks can be made in order to ensure the safety of passengers.

Police officers and soldiers are also set to investigate more than 2,000 taxi depots across Bangkok to see whether they have operated properly according to the rules of Section 5 of the Motor Vehicle Act (1979). If not, then they are subjected to a fine of 1,000 baht.

The DLT has also requested members of the public to properly check the IDs of taxi drivers to see whether they are accurate or not. Normally, the IDs are placed just on the dashboard covers in front of the passenger seat. The move is done to boost the security of passengers when using taxi services.
