Sanitation workers cleaned drains in South Pattaya in hopes of preventing the type of flooding that hit the city Jan. 26.

Workers used vacuum trucks and hoses to clean out drains near the Bali Hai Pier flyover bridge Jan. 26. Crews removed drain covers, sucked out sand and garbage, then sent workers into the drains to remove extraneous material.

A never-ending chore, the drain cleaning became urgent after heavy rains backed up drains from Sukhumvit Road to Pratamnak Hill. Flood waters 30 cm. deep hit busy streets, while other drains backed up into fountains of sewage and storm water.
