Disease Control Department director-general Phonthep Siriwanarangsan said after a meeting between officials of the Ministries of Public Health and Interior that all provincial governors have been asked to closely monitor any dengue fever outbreak situation in their respective provinces, and arrange for the eradication of mosquito spawning sites every week for 8 weeks, in a concerted nationwide effort to rein in the number of new dengue fever patients. The spawning sites eradication drive will last until October 16.
101 persons have lost their lives to the disease this year, and around 100,000 have become infected.
Dr. Phonthep said the government needs to foster awareness in the public in monitoring against the disease. He added that the medical expense associated with treating dengue fever patients has reached 2 billion baht this year.
