BURIRAM, 20 December 2013 The cold spell hitting the North and Northeast has claimed another victim on Thursday. At the same time, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was holding a meeting with provincial governors to address the cold and drought in some provinces.

The low temperature in Buriram has resulted in the death of a 68 years old man whose body was found in his own home in Krasang district. Police believe the man died from the sudden drop in temperature, which reached 13 degrees Celsius on Thursday.

In Nakhon Phanom, the lowest temperature was observed to be about 10 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Around 500 dogs at the animal quarantine center in the province, seized from dog smugglers who were trying to transport them to neighboring countries, were at risk of catching respiratory tract infections.

In Nan province, poultry farm owners were experiencing massive deaths of chicks as the temperature dropped. Farm management had to try and mitigate the problem by turning on all the lights in the sheds.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra called a meeting of provincial governors on Thursday to address the cold and drought problems afflicting a combined 20 provinces, telling the governors to plan responses based on past experiences.
