Public health experts from 25 countries used Chonburi as a case study on battling the deadly 2009 H1N1 influenza virus as the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation met in Pattaya.

Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome and top officials at the Chonburi Public Health Department welcomed committee members and foreign guests of the international conference to Pattaya City Hall Jan. 30.

Doctors Smith Prasannakan and Vichai Thanasophon discussed how Pattaya and Chonburi health officials managed to get ahead of the virus, which killed 184 and infected 16,874 in Thailand in 2009.

Following its Pattaya mission, the Foundation meeting returned to Bangkok, where HRH Princess Sirindhorn presented its top awards to Sir Michael Rawlins, chairman of the U.K.’s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, and Dr. Uche Veronica Amazigo, former director of the African Program for Onchocerciasis Control at the World Health Organization’s offices in Nigeria.
