The suggestion came during the Center for Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) meeting on January 1st. The Labor Minister explained that the 99 members of the council he proposed should comprise representatives selected by the Election Commission (EC) from each province and the rest should be experts from related fields.
According to him, the council will be tasked with drafting the constitution amendment, and conducting public opinion on the draft. Minister Chalerm stressed that his approach could be done side by side with the general election.
Regarding some of the EC members' opposition to the holding of the national polls, the Labor Minister responded that the EC is duty bound to organize the election, and that the EC members who do not wish to do their duties should resign.
He also said that the EC could hold another election within 180 days to get additional MPs to fill up the whole number required by the constitution, should the February polls fail to come up with the required number.
