BANGKOK, Feb 14 – Cambodia and Thailand will open a new permanent checkpoint and will conduct a joint survey for border demarcation in agreements reached during their two days of border talks in Bangkok.

The meeting of the 5th Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission concluded here on Tuesday with agreement that a new permanent checkpoint will open at Nong-ian in Thailand’s Sa Kaeo -and Stung Bot in Cambodia’s Bantey Meancheay on March 5.

Bandhit Sotipalarit, chairperson of Thai delegates and his Cambodian counterpart Var Kim Hong held a joint press conference after the two-day meeting ended on February 14.

The meeting also approved surveying and installing boundary markers 1-23.

The two sides also discussed taking aerial photographs and agreed that technicians will specify qualifications and select a company to do the task, paving the way for border demarcation.

The talks were straightforward ending with agreement to give priority to easy tasks first before moving on to difficult ones. Any debatable issues will be postponed and will be later vetted by the two sides again, said Mr Bandhit.

Meanwhile, Mr Hong said the talks, resumed after a two-year suspension, helped renew close relations between the two countries.

He said he expected more talks on other matters will be carried out in the future.
