BANGKOK, 13 May 2014  - The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) would increase the size of its bus fleet to 2,700, while enlarging the number of trips passing schools to 22,000 per day ahead of the new school term.

Acting Director of the BMTA, Naret Boonpiem, said that the plan would be implemented on May 16th and would conclude at the end of September.

He said aside from additional trips and buses, the agency would also deploy 500 officials to monitor the system and be on the lookout for accidents in 48 risk areas of the capital. Mr. Naret said that the campaign aims at reducing by 50% the number of accidents involving buses in Bangkok and the number of passenger complaints lodged against the bus operators within 5 months.
